I feel a wave of relief wash over me after checking out an old post on Jason Santa Maria’s site. Although he has contributed in such crucial ways to some of the great palaces of the design world, such as AIGA, Typkit, and A List Apart, his writing and speaking always makes me feel that he is trying to equalise all of us (web designers, developers, type designers), rather than elevate himself above the rest of us.
Even when it’s not necessarily related to any problem I’m facing, his posts remind me that we all start in the same place.
When I start feeling insecure, or that I’m late to the game, which I’m sure is not uncommon for designers, I often recall his post about type designer Frederic Goudy, who started doing type design in his 40s, without any prior experience. His typefaces are on your computer, right now.
Thanks again, Jason!
